A Historic Journey

Preserving blues history, honoring legends, and inspiring future generations from the heart of Chicago

A Legacy in Every Note

The Blues Heaven Foundation was established by Willie Dixon with the mission to preserve, promote, and protect the rich heritage of American blues music. This nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization is dedicated to ensuring that the legacy of blues continues to thrive by supporting senior blues musicians, educating the public about the history and culture of blues, and encouraging new generations of artists to carry the tradition forward. Through various programs and initiatives, the foundation provides resources and assistance to musicians while also fostering community awareness and appreciation for this vital American art form. Located in the historic Chess Records Building, the foundation also offers guided tours to celebrate the history of blues and the influential artists who shaped it.

2120 South Michigan Avenue

Chess Records was based at several different locations on the south side of Chicago, Illinois. The most famous location was 2120 S. Michigan Avenue from around 1956 to 1967.

During those years, Willie Dixon, Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Sonny Boy Williamson II, and so many more were recorded in the legendary studio.

As an homage, it was immortalized by the British rock group The Rolling Stones in “2120 South Michigan Avenue,” an instrumental that was recorded there in June 1964, during the group's first U.S. tour. George Thorogood did his own tribute to the historic label by recording an album by the same title released in 2011.

The Legacy of Chess Records

Chess Records, formed and run by brothers Leonard and Phil Chess, was a company that produced and released many important singles and albums, which are now regarded as central to the blues and rock music genres. At one time, Chess Records was considered “America's greatest blues label,” with notable acts including Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Little Walter, Etta James, Chuck Berry, and Bo Diddley. Willie Dixon was one of the main producers, songwriters, and arrangers of the signature "Chess Records Sound".

Willie and Marie Dixon

In 1993, Willie Dixon's widow, Marie, purchased the Chess Records building at 2120 S. Michigan Avenue, and began the restoration of the historic landmark, reopening in September 1997 with a dedication ceremony, donating the building to Willie Dixon's Blues Heaven Foundation. It is now home to the Blues Heaven Foundation.

Willie Dixon was a legendary musician, songwriter, and producer whose impact on American blues music is immeasurable. Known for penning some of the genre’s most iconic songs, Dixon’s work has influenced countless artists across generations and genres. In the 1960s, 70s, and 80s, believing that his mission was not yet complete, Dixon founded the Blues Heaven Foundation to preserve the heritage of blues music, support senior musicians, and inspire new talent. His dedication to the blues community continues to resonate today, ensuring that the spirit and sound of blues endure for years to come.
